Cicuta maculata

Similar to Conium maculatum L.

There may be many similar species as Poison Hemlock is in the parsley family. Many members of the parsley family share the umbellate flowering structures, highly dissected leaves and height of Poison Hemlock. Therefore, emphasis may be placed on the purple spotted stem as a vegetative character. However, Water Hemlock (Cicuta maculata) also has a purple spotted stem but may be distinguished by its leaves being two times dissected with leaflets that are lanceolate and coarsely serrated on the margins, i.e Poison Hemlock has more finely dissected leaves. All parts of Water Hemlock are also poisonous.
