Euonymus spp.

Similar to Euonymus alatus (Thunb.) Sieb.

Strawberry Bush or Hearts-a-Bustin' (Euonymus americanus) is a small native shrub with similarly-sized, opposite leaves and fruit. The green twigs of Strawberry Bush are squared but do not have corky wings. The fruit capsule is a bright rosy red with warty bumps. It splits open to reveal several scarlet seeds inside. This attractive species grows well in deep shade and moist soil. Attracts bees and birds.

Eastern Wahoo (Euonymus purpureus) is a small native tree with larger, opposite leaves, no corky wings on the stems, and smooth rosy red fruit containing scarlet seeds. It will grow in shade as well, but performs better with sun. Attracts bees and birds.
